Prison Ministry

Sitting in prison far from his home and not knowing when he might be released, Missionary “M”* was discouraged and worried. His ‘crime’ was sharing the Gospel in a Mus!im dominated area of Ethiopia. The local authorities conjectured that “time away” in a filthy prison with little food would stop his voice. God heard “M’s” pleas for direction and gave him an unusual and fruitful ministry behind prison bars. Read “M’s” testimony given after his recent release.

Facing ISIS

God called one of NewLife’s missionaries to pastor a church among his unreached people group. He obediently found a large room to rent where he could disciple converts and hold worship and prayer services. An ISIS terrorist cell demolished the “church” and severely beat Daniel* sparing his life with warnings and threats. Daniel went into hiding to heal and seek God.

But not even the fear of ISIS could hold God’s servant back from following God’s instructions. Pastor Daniel bravely returned to the town and stood before local authorities arguing for the right to hold church services. Daniel is now shepherding converts in a better building with more room under the legal covering promised in the Ethiopian constitution! He knows he is not out of danger, but confidently proclaims Psa. 10:29, “Rise up, Lord! Do not let man prevail!” and is once again unashamedly sharing the Good News.

School Days

30 kindergartners graduated from our 2-year early childhood program and are on to First Grade at the government school. The teachers love our graduates because they have a solid foundation for reading, math and writing. This early intervention sets the children on a road to achievement and success!

30 new 5-year-olds are settling into their pre-school class, learning the protocol of school routines. Many come to us with signs of malnourishment, but with daily school lunches, vitamins and occasional goat stew, the children’s energy level and attention noticeably improve. Here is a closer look (cute pictures, too!).

Happy Birthday One-Year-Olds!

Two little ones found abandoned at birth are turning one-year-old! Abdi and Yichalal are buddies and crawl everywhere, usually heading toward the same toy! In a few months (or weeks) they will be toddling around, but for a little longer they still require cuddles and a bottle at naptime. We hope 2 families will come soon and adopt them as their own sons. This blog link with a video offers a peek into orphanage life.

Refreshment for Key Staff!

Key staff from Ethiopia, Abebe and Abonesh, spent a month in the U.S. this summer. Vacations are not part of Ethiopian culture and these two in particular pour out their lives in ministry nonstop, so we were delighted to host them for two weeks (see pictures here). They spent another two weeks visiting family on the East Coast.
